You’ve seen the boobs, you’ve seen the house, are you now ready to see the mind…?
Well, well, the 8th blog, time moves fast, it’s almost as if I wrote the last one just a few days ago. Alright, let's get the show on the road!
So, this week there is a little problem, I didn’t know what to write about. I’m not in the mood to do any kind of ‘boob stuff’ and I can’t show you the really cool stuff I’m working on at the moment. So right, what’s left to write about?
Well eventually it dawned on me, I’ll show some of my own stuff. So okay it’s not Spellborn related but who cares, it seems people like my own stuff just as well. Anyway, you get to see some work from my sketchbook (taken with a camera). Besides, it’s something completely different compared to Spellborn. Basically my brain splattered on paper (but then looking nicer).
Umm, I guess this then calls for a little bit about why and how I do this stuff.
Well, right then, why? I just LOVE to do art. Yes, it’s an integral part of who I am, I can’t spend a day without doing something creative, if I don’t it either means I’m paralyzed or dead. How creative I am depends, some times it’s nothing more but some quick squiggles to jolt an idea down on paper, other times it’s a couple of complete drawings. Besides just being creative for the sake of being creative, it’s an amazing exhaust to just, throw out any old mental garbage you can do without! Who needs shrinks, just draw people! (Maybe that’s why I draw so much…)
That’s also the difference between ‘my own’ work and what I do for Spellborn. The things I do for myself are much closer to me, and usually will give people a glimpse of the way I think and look at things. Sadly it gets misinterpreted often though: ‘Dude, go get some help quick.’ It actually amuses me when people respond like that, I don’t know, I probably have some weird twisted sense of humor.
So, how do I do this then? Well, usually my main tools of passion are pencil, pen & ink and technical pens. Now, I make it a point to go out, usually draw in a café where I like to sit. Spend a big part of the day there drinking tea or getting all jiggy on cappuccinos. (Alright, and Whiskey if the mood’s on me.)
Especially now in the summer I’m almost at the terrace of that place everyday, I’m probably a bit of a familiar sight there now, since I’ve been coming there for many years; ‘The guy with the sketchbook’. It is really funny when I talk with someone to hear: ‘Ya know, I’ve actually always been a bit curious about what you drew.’ It’s not like I hear that all the time, but it makes me wonder… Come on people, just bug me and ask. Why are people so afraid of socializing?
Sadly I don’t do too much stuff with the actual pen & ink anymore, because it’s just a hassle in a café, don’t want to set up an atelier before I can draw. So my trusty backpack (see blog 6, nr.10), sketchbook, pencils, technical pens and eraser and I’m set to go!
Basically what I do is do a really when I draw is a quick setup, a basic skeleton of the figure(s) and poses, and then work it out. If I feel really frisky and happy I might even shade it a bit. Now all that is done in pencil, I try to keep it light so it’ll erase easier.
Then come out the pens, I like to work with fine pens, lets see a: 0.3 and a 0.05 pen is pretty much all I use. The 0.3 I use for outlining and adding weight here and there in the line work.
The 0.05 is for actual shading, I prefer cross-hatching. It’s a technique I’ve been refining for years now, and I must say I’m now really at the point I control it well enough to not think about what I want to achieve and just go in and do it. Usually on a day like that I’ll spend maybe, say 4 to 5 hours on a drawing. Taking my time, maybe chat a bit here and there and have a look at the nice ladies. (And no, don’t go send mail about, ‘work more on TCOS’, trust me, I make insanely long days. No harm done to Spellborn :p)
So there you have it, Pesti behind the scenes. I hope it was a fun read for everyone, and also hope you enjoyed the brief trip into my mind :)
(TCOS, gameamp, nor me will be held responsible for any side effects that might occur after seeing the images, like, but not limited too: melting eyeballs, the sudden uncontrollable urge to declare you are in fact a godlike deity, or want to wear boxer shorts on your head. Send pictures if you do the last one though (excluding Biird and Merztibug).)
Oh, a last fact I forgot to mention. Music! So important, if you followed my blogs, you can see I always close off with a little sample of what I’ve been listening to that week. Well, That’s going to happen too, but I wanted to show how important it actually is for me. 1st, no music, no art. Plain and simple, I’ve got to have music to work. 2nd It really inspires me, and this kind of made me come up with a nice little give away (you got to do something for it though!) Like I said, music is inspiring; the second drawing in this article is based on the song of a band. There’s actually the tiny bit of lyrics that I ripped (and changed slightly) that inspired me to draw it.
Here’s the deal:
The 1st person that can tell me the name of the band that inspired me will get a TCOS shirt! W00T!
The 1st person that can not only tell me the band, but also the song will get a TCOS crystal! ZOMG!!! (You bet this is something you WANT to have kids! I sold my own grandma to get one.)
Now how freaking amazing is that eh?
All you got to do to become someone who will happy for the rest of his/her life is, sign up with gameamp, and then PM your answer to the lovely: thejeni Make sure you have: "Pestiblog 8: music" in the title. And she will make sure everything will be sorted.
