Another day, another…Blog?
So, what shall I write about this time? Some ideas have been going trough my head, but I decided to keep it simple this time, after all, I also have to work on getting this game finished. So, no boobs, no ‘what your workspace should look like’, just plain and simple, what I am building for spellborn at the moment.
So, Naj-treb has decided I should work on TOTA, which is really cool. Normally I have the feeling he kind of, shoves all the unpleasant jobs onto other peoples plates. I don’t know, just a hunch I have.
But, anyway, not this time! TOTA, it doesn’t really matter for now what the name stands for, all you have to know is that it’s going to be very cool and you’ll probably end up in it.
Last week (I think) we released a bunch of artwork, and as luck would have it, there’s TOTA stuff as well.
Right, that’s what I got to work with, 3 lovely concepts, and right now I’m working on the throne. You’ll see it in an almost finished state. Now originally this throne was already done by me, but it just turns out it didn’t have that whole, ‘kingly’ feeling going on. So, it was redesigned and here we are.
It should look big, impressive and also fit in the style of TOTA. The interesting thing about the style is that it’s just a little different from your normal Spellborn style.
Things are less crooked, it’s all a bit harsher and cooler ( as in colder palette ) so it’s a nice break for me to just do something else for a little bit.
So, here’s the flatshaded model:
Alright, now I always work with character models to make sure it will actually fit. At times you have to take a bit of liberty, but it’s important that all things follow the same rule of scale. Also in this case I took one of our ‘sit animated’ models to make sure it would fit with characters sitting down.
Right, so then it’s time to measure, which isn’t too hard. We have fixed sizes for things, like stairs are always 12 max units high (each step).
The first thing I did was roughly place stairs, place the character and from there on work outwards. Starting with simple primitives to quickly block out the model, get a feel for the mass and shape and then go in and refine.
Eventually you end up with something like the first screengrab. Next it’s uv’s, kind of a boring job. Not a nasty job but it’s something that sort of makes me turn on autopilot and drift away with the music I’m listening too. After doing so many models you kind of get the hang of uv’ing them.
After uv’s and texturing and a couple of hours you get something like this:
Yeah my dual desktop (well, that’s not what you get, that’s what I work on ;) ) on the left Photoshop with the concept art and texture I’m working on. On the right the whole max scene. Now, you don’t really see it in the texture, but I made lots of lovely details in it, and the texture goes on the spikes behind the throne. And guess what?
Yep, no one will see my hard work! But, luckily I can reuse that for a different ornament so everyone can still enjoy it.
And to top it off, I played around a little and made a beauty render:
So, that’s it for this blog, Just a little sneak peek of things to come, and a little look of how Pestibug cooks in the kitchen.
There’s still some things that have to be tweaked and added, like old plants, make it look less new, because it will be in an old place. Of course I’ve seen the whole thing together already and it looks very nice. A typical Spellborn environment that overflows with a sense of history and fun for you.
Random music this week: Barry Adamson, heather Nova, Queens of the stoneage.
Hmmm, oh yeah, and IRC quotes are evil. |
