Fear not, it might be a dungeon, but you’re safe with me.
Another week, another blog. This week I’ll get a bit more personal and show you my workspace at home. Don’t be afraid, it’s perfectly safe to come in, besides I cleaned up! Now, why would I take you to my place and show you this?
Well, see, I’m amazed at how many people tell me they want to go into games and learn how to model. Thus, I decided to show a little bit of what makes a good workspace, yes, this is the answer to that one question that keeps coming up:
“How do I get to be as cool as you guys?!?”
Well, lets have a look how you can achieve that. Going into games can be a hard road at times, things just seem to not work out for you at all, no one replies to your portfolio, companies want ‘more experience’ and a whole lot other nastiness that you might encounter. Now, your skills are something only you can practice on, but lets see at what else is mandatory to become a kick ass modeler!
Right, let’s break it down:
First, a nice hue of violet on your walls, ceiling and everything else in your room in a bright orange is a MUST! Yes, this is what gets the creative juices flowing. No, no don’t start “but I don’t like violet…” No violet and orange? Well, go look for another job then, these colors are mandatory!
So what else is there?
1+5: chat, music, junk pc and monitor. You’ve got to have this. This is how I keep my eye on irc, see if everyone still behaves the way they should. (also to stir up things when it’s too quiet in there).
2+4: work pc and dual monitor, you need your space for your 3Dmax, photoshop and the other ten thousand programs you might have running. True, it might not be as important as the chat/music pc, but still pretty much a requirement to have.
3: Sketchbook, yep, pencil, pen and all those ‘analog tools’ are still being used these days. I prefer to go out and draw and sketch a little. I wonder what’s on there anyway, maybe have a closer look at that later on.
6: Alright, now if you live in a amazing, but old house like me, then a little extra carpet is a must! Working with cold feet is a big fat no-no. Of course not everyone can afford such a stylish piece of carpet as I have there, but just any rug will do, so no worries.
7: Well, Le bum has to be treated kindly as well, so have a good looking chair. It doesn’t matter if the thing actually gives you a hernia within 3 hours, just as long as the chair looks cool. Yes, looks over ergonomics! This chair came with a masseuse, she’s a bit camera shy so no pics of her.
8: Yes, you may bow. It’s the famous Spellborn coat! Now, this actually doesn’t do much for your work flow and such, but it’s nice how the crowds on the street part for you when you’re wearing it. I nicknamed it “The Moses coat”.
9: Cds. Yep, now you see them, they actually exist, little silvery plastic discs with music on them. To be a kick ass artist you’ll need lots of them. This is one of the things we ask in every job interview we have ‘How many cds do you own and what kind of music is on them?’ No matter how good you are, no cds or wrong taste in music, means no job.
10: It’s a backpack… Forgot to take it away before I took the pic. So sue me :p
11: Ah, yep, also very important and easily overlooked! As a really cool game artist you’ll be making long, long, loooong hours! That means working deep into the night. In the dark…. Alone… Behind your pc. This little light keeps me safe, my own little nightlight. Yes trust me, you’ll be wanting one too.
12: Wacom. Very important to have a digital pen and tablet like this if you want to end up doing models and textures. I have actually no idea how it works, but my little Korean friend that I’ve hired tells me it kicks ass.
13: THA WOOFER! You can throw all the other stuff away if you don’t have this thing. It serves two purposes, one music of course. Two: socializing. Now let me explain, working means long lonely hours, especially at night like I said. So when I fancy a chat at the dull moment, like 3 in the morning, I just turn up the music and soon a neighbor will come to my door and talk to me! Yeah sure it’s usually a short chat, but hey that’s all I need.
So there you have it, all the essentials to become a cool, kick ass artist just like me!
Some action shots:
Yes, all the other important stuff, irc, msn, tcos website, winamp and other stuff you guys don’t need to know about :p
Texturing at the moment, middle screen is my main screen, the right screen is where I keep menus and programs I don’t actively use at that moment but need open anyways. This thing I’m working on is a shield texture, on the right you can see how it looks in 3Dmax. This is for the Arena entrance btw.
Leaked concept or not? Who knows, I usually just doodle and draw and later on just show a whole bunch of stuff to the other guys and we’ll see if there’s something nice that we can use for Spellborn.
Yep, you may bow, you may drool, it’s all okay. This is the one and only Spellborn coat! (well, everyone else at the office has one too of course). See how nice it compliments on my orange closet?
So, that’s it, you’ve seen my ‘crib’ now get out! No wait, you can stay, but at your own risk ;) .
