Your final stop in spellborn…
Hi all, I've been asked to write a bit about what I'm working on each week, as far as possible of course, because we don't want to reveal all the goodies yet. But, this week, for starters, some nice stuff! This week I'm working on the Quarterstone graveyard. I'm not building the actual level itself, but a big part of the things you will see in it, like the crypts, tombs, trees etc. etc. All these assets will then go to a level artist who puts them all into the level.
My task is to make all the assets look cool. Before I start there's always the concept art that needs to be discussed, if it's possible to build what has been drawn, what the textures should look like, in general, get my mind in sync with that of our Art lead. Then I'll sit down with whoever puts all my models in the game and we'll discuss the final look of the whole level. This process repeats itself until the whole level is finished, just to make sure quality and vision are consistent for the whole game.
In this case, we've wanted the graveyard to gradually become more deteriorated the further you venture into it. So at the start, things will look rather new, next it will show more damage (broken down, parts missing, collapsed crypts) further in there will just be rubble and such. This should provide a sense of history, and a good atmosphere. I think it is very important to have these two things, they just add so much more to a game, and give the player a immersive experience. And luckily, this is how everyone thinks in the TCOS development team.
So, this week (and a bit longer I assume) I'm building and texturing crypts, tombs, nasty looking plants, all the stuff that makes a graveyard look creepy.
Disclaimer, pictures shown are of 'work in progress models'.
Next week I'll talk about the details I focus on to add that sense of history and 'realism', in fact, how I try to convince you that this graveyard has been in use for a long time, and how many generations have found their last resting place here.
