Pestibug

1. Where does “Pesti Bug” come from?
From my mom and dad. And if you mean the nick, well Pest stands for annoying, bug for bugging, mix ‘em up and you’ve got me
2. If someone wanted to stalk you, what country would they have to go to?
Holland would be the place to be, just don’t get stuck in Amsterdam or you’ll never find me.
3. How many years have you been around on Earth?
27 precious years
4. What does a normal day consist of for you?
Alright, wake up around 8ish, do all the stuff to start the day, then work till well give or take 2 at night. Take some breaks in between, but mostly work.
5. What kind of programs do you use for your job?
3D max 7 and photoshop is pretty much all I need for my work.
6. What is your favorite part of your job?
Finishing a model
7. For that matter, what exactly is it that you do?
Character and level modeling and concept/texturing. I started out doing characters, later moved on to level team to build the more epic and complex things. I do some character stuff from time to time, but those are rare occasions.
8. What is on your computer desk (at work and home)?
Hahaha, well, at the moment pretty much a mess. Lets see, 3 monitors, 2 keyboards and mice, lamp, piles of cd’s (I love music) ashtray and all the other random junk that finds its way onto a desk.
9. Did you receive any kind of special training for it?
Well, I studied at the academy of arts here in Holland for two years, this was when I still did fine arts, but that didn’t work out too well, they kicked me off. Later I moved on to 3D arts. So basically I’ve taught myself all the skills I have. There have to be props given tho’ to the wonderful people at www.polycount.com. I ended up there some how and they’re into modeling for games, amateurs and pro’s just doing what they like. I picked up a lot there and made good friends.
10. How did you get into “the business”?
Well, I’m still wondering about that one myself, it all went kind of strange. I was actually looking for a job overseas because at the time Holland just didn’t have much to offer in the games bizz. So I told the good people over at www.polycount.com where I hang out and learned a lot from I was about to go onto the market. Then one day I get an Email from someone from that community telling me there’s this company in my city (what are the odds, well, like winning the mega jackpot in Vegas would be a good example I suppose). So I decided to give it a shot, wet my toes, get a bit of an idea what they’re like and it turned out just great. I knew from the moment I set foot in the office these guys where in it for real. And well, you all now little by little get to see the fruits of our labor.
11. What was the first job you ever had?
Hmmm, that’s long ago, I’ve had my share of jobs. I don’t know my first, but I do remember one of my first and one I enjoy very much. Working at a graveyard. Being a Jack-of-all-trades. So light machinery maintenance, greenery and also burials and emptying the graves. Really liked that job
12. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An artist! Later a 3D artist for games, and voila, see what I’ve become. I still snigger when I think back to all the people (teachers, you have a *special* place in my heart!) who said: Art, no don’t throw away your future, go study for a real job.’
*=sarcasm
13. Do you have a preferred platform for games? (why?)
Well the PC is what I’ve always played because it’s so versatile, but with the next gen consoles I’m now playing Xbox360 as well, and despite its silly name the wii will be standing next to it when it’s out. I like consoles for their easy and ‘couch slouching factor’ Well, I’ll have to see about that with the wii, but it sounds like a fun thing to have.
14. What is your all time favorite game?
That question is unfair, there’s so many! But yeah it would have to be Quake3 Arena. Always come back to that game just to unwind. It’s a shame I don’t have much time to play it tho’.
15. What is your favorite genre to play in?
FPS games. They’re so immersive being first person and usually on top of the next gen stuff, and I’m a sucker for good looking games.
16. What do you look for in a game?
Whoops, already said that, visuals. Well gameplay too of course, but it better be DAMNED good gameplay will I discard visuals and still play it. Other than that, it just has to grab me, and that can be many things, a gimmick, or very good storyline, or a really scary game, sadly there’s so little of the latter
17. How long have you been into games?
Lets see, well if you count my commodore 64 it’s been for a long time. But I got on to the whole pc thing really late, when I was 19 or something. 1st game I got was Quake. And well, that really changed my life. Yes I know, sounds soppy but true. So 8 yrs if you count from my first pc.
18. What would be the “dream game” to work for? (why?)
Well, that would be a horror/survival game. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and then make it a true horror/survival game. Make 18+ stand for something again :) It’s a shame there’s so little of these titles. Maybe they’re not popular, I don’t know, but I just have the idea with today’s and upcoming technology this type of game could be something really mature. Good interesting storylines. Deep character interaction that actually evokes emotions from the player. And gore of course to be truly gory.
19. How long have you been into art?
My whole life, it runs in the family so I’ve always had some kind of materials at my disposal. Or if not I’d start to draw on my walls much to the displeasure of my mom :) Umm, so yeah since I could hold a pen, pencil.
20. What is your favorite medium to work with?
Indian ink, I just love it. It’s so expressive to work in black and white. I usually go and draw in a café or on a terras if it’s nice weather so I kinda cheat myself by using fine liners of different sizes for ease. But yeah I love that material. When I’m at home I use the old fashion pen you dip in the ink and brushes. Next to that I always use pencils.
21. What piece of your work are you most the proud of?
That’s really hard to say, there’s so many things I’m proud of. Well, for spellborn, I think it would be the Oracle temple, because that’s where the whole game universe is build around, and yeah, I’m glad I got the chance to build it. It was a pain to get right, but when I see it in game it’s something special. For my own personal works it’s impossible to say, because they all are very personal.
22. When you are not working, what is it you do?
‘Not…working?’ Well, there’s little no working. The game has to be finished, shipped, get in the hands of thousands of players to make them happy. So right now it’s just making long days. I break ‘em up with short breaks, but when I take real time for myself it’s either, go out and have a drink in the city and draw a bit or read a bit. Or spend some time with friends and family. Anyway, basically what it boils down too is this, when you turn someone’s hobby into work, there is no such thing as work/not work. It becomes just living, some times you really have to drag yourself away from it
23. Do you check any websites out on a regular basis? (If yes, which ones?)
Oh yes, of course, I’d like to keep my eye on what the people think of TCOS, but I don’t have much time to actually follow everything, I mean I even can’t keep up with our own forums at times.. But yes a list:
www.tcos.com (of course)
www.gameamp.com I think you guys even have screenshots of stuff that we haven’t even build yet, completely nuts! I have to say tho’ to those who read this and are not member of gameamp, c’mere and join!
www.mmorpg.com Well, this is the big one of course. Just to have an overview where we stand between all the other mmo’s.
www.polycount.com Gotta see what’s happening over at the big green giant.
www.vgcats.com and www.penny-arcade.com Because these guys crack me up.
24. What is your favorite “pick up” line?
‘Hey babe, I’m a 3D games modeler, wanna pose for me and get famous?’ I’m not going to tell if this line has resulted in much pleasure or not. :p (ladies, feel free to respond tho’)
25. When you need a refreshing beverage, what kind do you grab?
Oooh, Iced-tea. Best drink ever if the weather is hot. Otherwise, juices or water.
26. What was the last adventure you went on?
I’m still on it, the Spellborn Adventure!
27. What is your favorite piece of obsolete technology?
The cassette and lp’s. Casettes where just fun to play with, do crazy loops with them. And lp’s, well just got to love the imperfect (and thus perfect) sound of music coming from an lp. Alas, that is almost truly obsolete these days. :(
28. Any tattoos or piercing?
One tattoo, more coming up when I feel like having them done and have the money hehehe. So far the plan is to have my whole back done and sleeves on my arms (well sort of). No piercings. I wanted them but no one wanted to do them where I wanted them. No, not there! I wanted to get the insides of my wrists pierced.
29. Are there any other occupants in your home that try to get your attention off the computer?
I have a lovely big house all for myself, so no one here that tries that. Of course there’s friends and family that tries to drag me away from it all. I just nail the doors shut.
30. Do you have any pets? (If so what kind, if not why not?)
Not at the moment, my mom has a cat and I kind of consider it my pet, but for the time being I don’t want to have any pets yet. If I get pets it will be cats.
31. What effects, if any, did the Industrial Revolution have upon the literature of the time? Discuss, citing examples where possible.
Wow, well I have no idea at the moment, but you know what? I’m going to think about that one and dedicate a whole article too it.
32. If you were giving this interview what question would you have asked, and what is the answer?
Hah, that’s a sneaky one. Hmmm alright. Where do I get my inspiration from?
Ah, good question, I was hoping this would come up. See of course tcos is under the all seeing eye of the art lead. Then there’s concepts you have to stick too as well, but there’s also a lot of freedom. You will probably not see whoever influenced me easily in the game, except for some things. But big influences to me are: Clive barker, Dali, Magritte, William Turner, Schiele, Gerald Scarfe. All amazing artists in their own right.
